Frequently asked
Your questions, answered simply.
How much does a family lawyer cost in Sydney?
It depends on how complicated things are and, often, on how the other side behaves. Your first 30-minute consultation is free. Before any work starts, you receive a written estimate of costs. Wherever we can, we offer fixed fees for set pieces of work.
How long after separation do I have to sort out property?
If you were married, you must apply to court within 12 months of your divorce becoming final. If you were in a de facto relationship, you have two years from separation. After that you need the court's permission, which is not guaranteed. It is best to get advice early.
Do I need to be divorced before we divide our property?
No. You can sort out property and the children's arrangements at any time after separating. A divorce simply ends the marriage and needs 12 months of separation. Keep in mind that a divorce starts the 12-month clock for property claims.
Can I get advice without my partner knowing?
Yes. Tell us how and when it is safe to contact you, and we will only contact you that way. You can meet us at our office, by video or by phone.
Do you only help people who live in the city?
No. Our office is in the Sydney CBD, which is easy to reach by train from almost anywhere, and we help families from all over Sydney and NSW. Many clients meet us by video or phone.
